Robin Smith, who sits on Jersey’s Emergencies Council, has issued his message days after the Chief Minister said he was ‘disturbed’ to hear some Islanders were flouting advice on isolation when travelling back from high-risk countries.
All Islanders are asked to self-isolate if they have come back from Europe or Eurasia – even if they travel via the UK.
Mr Smith said: ‘I know that the vast majority of Islanders are being responsible in following the government’s guidance. After all, the medical advice is clear – it will save lives.
‘However, I’m also aware that some are choosing to ignore it and are putting vulnerable people at risk.’
‘Self-isolation for travellers returning to the Island from outside the UK is vital to contain the spread of the virus and reduce demand on essential public services.’
Mr Smith also stressed that the public services, including the police, were ready to cope as the epidemic increases.
‘We’re working as one, with a clear focus to save lives and minimise, as far as possible, the short and long term impacts this virus will have,’ he said.
‘Be in no doubt, SoJP is here to protect our community – it’s what we do. We have plans and brilliant people to deliver them. We will be here for you.
‘We hugely appreciate the public support thus far and the many demonstrations of community spirit that we’re seeing on a daily basis.’
