New design and more eco-friendly milk cartons on way

The company will soon begin using brown ‘Rex Bio’ cartons which are made with sugar-cane-based plastics which have a 22% lower carbon footprint compared to the current containers.

The new designs will continue to use blue, green, orange and yellow for the 1%, 2.5%, skimmed and whole-milk versions while the organic range has been totally revamped with black colouring to make it stand out on the shelves.

However, the new packaging will still not be recyclable in the Island due to a lack of local resources.

But Jersey Dairy managing director Eamon Fenlon said the company would become the first dairy in the world to hold the LEAF marque on its fresh milk packaging.

‘The LEAF marque, which stands for linking environment and farming, is only awarded when every single step of the food chain – from the grass in the fields to the glass on the table – are of the highest standards,’ he said.

‘This includes soil and water management, energy efficiency, high animal welfare and nature conservation. LEAF is the gold standard of recognition for sustainable farming.

‘Our new packaging is another step in ensuring we maintain the very highest standards in everything we do.’

Manufactured by Tetra Pak, the new ‘Rex Bio’ cartons are made with renewable
materials. The paper comes from Forest Stewardship Council-certified forests and other controlled woods, and the inner layers are made from sugar cane, instead of fossil material.
