Man jailed for assault avoids prison in Scotland

Kenneth Gordon Chalk (35) was jailed in February for common assault and grave and criminal assault, the latter offence dating back to 2008. He evaded capture until last year when he was arrested for the assault and jailed by the Royal Court for 18 months.

On 14 August, a case went before the Perth Sheriff Court in Scotland, where Chalk is from, relating to an assault in October 2016 where he repeatedly punched a man on the head and body and knocked him to the ground.

Chalk had previously admitted an assault charge and was sentenced to complete a community payback order. However, he failed to comply.

In a recent court sitting, Sheriff Gillian Wade decided against giving Chalk another jail term, and re-imposed the order and ordered him to complete 250 hours of unpaid work within 12 months of his release from prison.

The court heard how Chalk is due to be released from his 18-month prison term in Jersey on 4 September this year.

He is currently serving his prison sentence after being arrested in September 2018 for assaulting a man in a taxi queue.

Following Chalk’s arrest, officers discovered that he was wanted for a crime dating back to 6 December 2008, when he glassed a man in the Royal Yacht. A group of people were trying to take a selfie when one of them bumped into a man at the bar. A confrontation occurred before Chalk thrust a pint glass into the face of the victim, who suffered swelling and a 1cm cut to his nose.

The doctor who treated the victim said he had been lucky not to have suffered more severe injuries.
