Database marketeer Oli Cano-Lopez destroyed the competition during the traditional yard-of-ale drinking contest at this year’s Jersey Mutual Gorey Fete. He finished the two-and-a-half pints in 12 seconds, well ahead of the second-place finisher who recorded a time of 36 seconds.
The 25-year-old from Essex is currently in the process of moving to the Island to live with his girlfriend, who is from Jersey. He had never previously been to Gorey Fete let alone entered a drinking contest.
Speaking after the event, Mr Cano-Lopez said he was feeling a bit worse for wear but he was ‘doing all right’.
‘It was one of those things – I knew I could drink a pint quite quickly and so I gave it a go. I was watching some of the other guys and they were taking 40 or 50 seconds so I started to think maybe it was quite hard.
‘But once I got up there I just did it. I’ve never done it before,’ he said.
‘It was a fantastic event and great fun.’
The event’s compère, Alan Le Maistre, described Mr Cano-Lopez’s performance on the stage as like an ‘animal’ and suggested the record would not be beaten for a long time, if ever.
Organisers are yet to collate the total raised from the annual event.
One organiser said the event was ‘well attended’ and the policy to let children under the age of 16 enter without paying had worked well. For adults, entry was £6.
