Beer Island festival to be annual event

The Beer Island festival was organised at short notice by the Be Served Group and Jersey CAMRA, following a gap in the Lido calendar becoming available after the cancellation of another event.

More than 1,000 people enjoyed over 80 craft beers, ales and ciders from the UK, Europe and the USA on Saturday, as well as a selection of gins and rums.

Sunday also proved to be a another successful day, and organiser Marcus Calvani revealed discussions have already begun for the 2020 event.

He said: ‘It went amazingly well, we had 1,000 people in total on the Saturday with the Sunday a bit more chilled out.

‘We have had some great comments and are thrilled with how it went, and now discussions are under way for the second event and it will now be a regular event in the calendar.

‘We are planning for next year and are hoping to get more European craft producers over for the two days and hopefully give them a tour of the Island.

‘One of the stand out moments for me was seeing people in their 80s enjoying beers and ales with people in their 20s.

‘Over the weekend we had no one thrown out and not one bit of trouble, it was a successful event.’

As well as producers from afar, local producers such as Stinky Bay and gin producers were on hand to offer local products, alongside local food also being sold.

Mr Calvani added: ‘The rise of craft has been incredible in Jersey.

‘A few years ago you couldn’t get any in the Island, and now there is a beer festival and around 150 craft products imported into the Island.’
