Asbestos in nearly 50 public buildings

A freedom of information request has revealed that 182 contain asbestos, but the majority are accessed by staff, caretakers and cleaners.

However, 46 properties can be entered by the general public. These include sports facilities, public toilets, Jersey Library and Fort Regent. The 182 buildings are across 118 sites, and represent a slice of the 715 freehold sites the States have in the Island.

A spokeswoman for the government said: ‘Jersey Property Holdings has undertaken a thorough Asbestos Management Survey of government properties built before 2000. Buildings constructed since 2000 comply with relevant legislation, so will not have any asbestos-containing materials present. All government buildings with ACMs are surveyed and inspected regularly.

‘Any decision to remove asbestos from a building is taken as a result of these regular inspections and surveys, after considering the risk rating of the product, including the type of asbestos, its location and condition. Any demolition or refurbishment work in a building that contains asbestos will include asbestos removal as part of the work.’

Management plans are in place for all buildings, with some sites, such as the Hospital, the Fire and Rescue Service headquarters and HMP La Moye being maintained by the service user.

Properties that have had removal and remedial works in the past five years include St Saviour’s Hospital, La Moye Primary School, Victoria College and Le Rocquier and Grainville Schools.
