Unions planning mass march?

Official details have not yet been released, but it is understood that all employees in dispute with the States Employment Board over their pay deal for 2018 and 2019 could join a march from Howard Davis Park to the Hospital on 9 February.

Groups involved would include civil servants, teachers, nurses, midwives and headteachers.

Discontent has grown among States workers after they received below-inflation pay rises for 2018 and 2019, with civil servants having already gone on strike twice and unions in the other employee groups gearing up for similar
action.

A social media post which is being circulated to nurses and midwives on Facebook says: ‘Hello everyone, on 9 February 10am to12pm there will be a large march/rally taking place.

‘Starting in Howard Davis Park and ending up outside the Hospital, it is being arranged by the other public sector unions but they have invited us to take part.

‘We’d love to use the opportunity to show the huge strength of feeling from nurses and midwives and from the public.

‘Please come in solidarity to show Charlie Parker and his team that we are all worth more than they are offering. To show how utterly disgusted we are at how much they all get paid. It would be great to see families friends and children there.’

The JEP contacted several public sector unions, but they did not wish to comment further, with no official arrangements confirmed at this time.

Union representatives were due to enter a mediation process, overseen by the Jersey Advisory Conciliatory Service, with the SEB this week.
