Islander hit by train in Rennes after falling asleep on tracks

Reports from the country say that the 52-year-old man was hit by a freight train in the early hours of Wednesday after falling asleep drunk on the tracks at Rennes’ main train station.

He is said to have lost a foot and sustained serious injuries to his head and abdomen in the incident.

Firefighters were reportedly called to the scene at around 3.30am and the man was taken to Rennes University Hospital.

Police in the French city said he was ‘visibly drunk’ and although the train driver had applied the brakes the train could not stop in time.

Railway company SNCF said it could not understand how the man had come to be on the tracks as the station is closed to the public at night and covered by security.

According to the daily French newspaper Ouest-France, 13 firefighters attended the scene after being alerted at 3.33am. The train was not due to stop at the station but ran over the man on the SNCF No 1 track.

The States of Jersey Police said it did not have any information on the incident and had not been contacted by their counterparts in Rennes.
