Goods seized by Customs auctioned

Laptops, tablets, a GoPro Hero6, wireless speakers as well as PS4 and Xbox One game consoles were among the items that Islanders bid on during the auction.

Simon Drieu, principal of Simon Drieu & Co Ltd auctioneers, said that Christmas shoppers may not necessarily think of going to Glencoe but the auctioneers do periodically receive consignments of new goods from the Customs and Immigration Service, as well as from the Viscount’s Department.

‘We get these kinds of consignments throughout the year and we’re very grateful to receive them,’ he said. ‘They generate an awful lot of interest because all of the items are new, boxed and sealed.

‘There are also more unfortunate cases, like with some of the items we have next week, when we are instructed to sell them on behalf of the Viscount [resulting from bankruptcy].’

The Customs and Immigration Service said that these kinds of items are seized as a result of non-payment of GST. According to a Customs spokeswoman, the proceeds raised from the sales ‘go into the miscellaneous Customs income account, which is then forwarded to the Treasury’.

The next auction at Glencoe is due to take place on 19 December. A selection of items for sale at the auction can be viewed at Glencoe or on Simon Drieu & Co Ltd’s website the day before the auction begins.
