Islands to discuss working together

Members of the Channel Island Political Oversight Board, which is made up of senior politicians and officials from both islands, are due to meet on Monday in St Peter Port to formalise the plans through signing a memorandum of understanding to agree to work together.

The collaboration is part of a wider plan for the two islands to work in partnership in a bid to improve public services and reduce costs to taxpayers.

Among the plans to be discussed in Monday’s meeting are mutual support where possible to deliver care, sharing expertise and making savings through combined purchases.

Chief Minister John Le Fondré and Health Minister Richard Renouf, are due to meet Guernsey’s Chief Minister, Gavin St Pier, and the president of the Committee for Health and Social Care, Deputy Heidi Soulsby.

Deputy Renouf said: ‘There are many common challenges facing Jersey’s and Guernsey’s health and care services, so working in partnership will help us tackle these issues more efficiently. We’re determined to improve our services and provide better value for money for our islanders.’

Senator Le Fondré added: ‘It is important to collaborate with other Channel Islands to develop resilience, economies of scale and better value for money.

‘We will work together to provide services which meet the needs of islanders, now and into the future.

‘It is anticipated that this joined-up approach will reduce the administrative burden across the islands.’
