Red-carpet celebration of 150 young people’s achievements

The YOSCARS – also known as the Youth Oscars – were staged to recognise children aged between 11 and 17 from 18 Youth Service projects from across the Island.

During the ceremony, Timothy Melim (17) and Sophie Venton (18) were announced as the Island’s new Youth Ambassadors. Within the role the pair will raise awareness and be the voice of the Jersey Youth Service across government and in the community in the coming year.

And throughout the evening, the Youth Projects were awarded bronze, silver or gold awards for their successes during the year.

Education Minister Tracey Vallois, Children’s Minister Senator Sam Mézec and principal youth officer Mark Capern presented the awards during the ceremony, which was held at the Royal Hotel on Tuesday.

Senator Tracey Vallois said: ‘We are so lucky to have young people so actively involved in the Youth Service, working as volunteers with other young people, being involved in high-profile interviews, such as the appointment of Jersey’s first Children’s Commissioner, and organising events and activities.’

Senator Mézec added: ‘These projects help to give young people a voice and build confidence and self-esteem, and the annual YOSCARS are a fantastic way of bringing all these successes together and celebrating young people’s achievements.

‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate everyone involved in organising such an important awards ceremony for young people in Jersey.’

The event was opened by Katy Glendenning – the first young person from Jersey to win a Prince’s Trust award. Mark Rogers, director general of Children, Young People, Education and Skills, and Children’s Commissioner Deborah McMillan also attended.
