Government promotes online safety message

The document, entitled ‘How to keep your child safe online’, will be emailed to the Island’s schools and posted on States social media channels over the coming days.

It has been produced by a team of States digital and education experts, following a cyber safety conference last week, and offers advice on what parents can do to manage and supervise their children’s access to the internet.

The leaflet quotes a statistic produced by UK regulator Ofcom, which states that 53 per cent of three to four year-olds in the UK use a mobile device to access the internet for nearly eight hours per week.

This finding also formed the basis of a conference for education and safeguarding professionals which took place at the Pomme d’Or hotel last week.

In parallel to the conference, the government conducted an awareness campaign in the Island’s primary schools throughout last week.

The campaign featured a drama production that addressed a range of online issues, including sexting, grooming and underage gaming.
