Half of vehicles stopped during Jersey road safety campaign are issued with defect notices

Motorists who break speed limits, use their mobile phones while driving or jump red lights are being targeted in a focused campaign by the States police this week.

Officers will be out at different times of the day, in various locations, as part of the co-ordinated campaign.

The police are also working with the honorary police and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Department at checkpoints to remove defective vehicles from the roads.

By 4 pm on Monday, officers working at a number of locations across the Island had already stopped 50 commercial vehicles, issued 25 of them with defect notices and one was taken off the road.

Inspector Andy Bisson said: ‘We are committed to reducing the injuries caused by road traffic collisions, and with our partner agencies we are looking closely at the issues that cause these collisions.

‘We are concentrating our resources, this week, in those areas where we have received complaints from the community about matters like speeding or red-light jumping.’
