Islanders head for adventure in support of mental health charity

Francis Joven, Mariska Hartkamp and Paul De Louch have been training hard to complete the famous 980-miles bicycle route, the Ride Across Britain.

The nine-day challenge starts from Land’s End on 8 September and finishes in John O’Groats.

Mr Joven said that he was particularly looking forward’ to the event’s ‘breathtaking scenery’ and ‘the camaraderie among cyclists’.

Meanwhile, Rachel Leck is due to attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in a ten-day trip beginning on 14 September. The expedition, in which members are accompanied by highly skilled guides, has been designed to combat altitude sickness by featuring a slightly longer route, allowing the participants more time to acclimatise.

Ms Leck said that attempting to reach the summit of Africa’s highest peak was ‘the perfect opportunity to rechallenge herself’, having previously trekked in India and Nepal.

The initiatives are part of Deloitte’s One Million Futures Charity Challenge. All four adventurers are employees of the accountancy firm.

James Le Feuvre, executive director of Mind Jersey, said: ‘We are very grateful for the support that the team at Deloitte in Jersey continue to bring to Mind Jersey, both in raising awareness and also in much-needed funds.’
