Jack Surcouf, recognisable by his bushy ginger beard, won both the yard of ale and spaghetti-eating competition in 2014 and 2015. He also won the spaghetti competition in 2013.
And with a time of 1 minute and 47 seconds – the 27-year-old labourer retook his title for the spaghetti-eating competition on Wednesday, much to the delight of the hundreds who gathered to watch him.
However, he failed to win the yard of ale contest – equivalent to 2.5 pints – and took second place behind Californian Daniel Witczak, who recorded a drinking time of 31.2 seconds. Mr Surcouf then downed another yard in a second attempt to reclaim the number-one spot.
Asked why he liked taking part in the competition, he said: ‘It is just a good laugh. I do not take it that seriously – it is just for fun and it is always a really good night. I did not do it for two years as I have been travelling, so it is good to be champion again.’
Mr Surcouf added: ‘I put my name down to go first for the yard of ale and I think if I had gone last it would have given me a bit more time for my food to go down. After the competition people were congratulating me and coming up to me asking for tips and asking if I was going to do it next year. I think I probably will.’
