The pair married at La Mare Wine Estate at 3.30 pm on Saturday, just a few hours after the very first outdoor wedding was held in the Island for a couple who wished to remain anonymous.
Mrs Ferguson, née Kay, said that she and her husband had been keeping their fingers crossed that the legislation allowing open-air marriages would come into force in time for their nuptials.
States Members agreed to overhaul the Island’s laws in 2014 to allow same-sex and humanist marriages as well as outdoor ceremonies to take place, but the new legislation took several years to draft due to the number of changes that were required.
The legislation only came into force on Sunday 2 July after politicians ratified the changes at the end of last month. Mrs Ferguson, a full-time mother to 18-month-old Oliver, said it had been a nervous wait to see if the new law would be introduced in time for their ceremony.
‘I wanted an outdoor wedding because I think Jersey is so stunning,’ the 24-year-old from St John said. ‘It felt such a waste not to have an outdoor wedding. I was over the moon when I heard we could have one.’
Mr Ferguson, a 27-year-old office administrator, proposed to his wife in Marbella in 2016.
Meanwhile, La Mare said the change in legislation had already increased bookings at the St Mary venue by around 20 per cent.
La Mare managing director Tim Crowley said: ‘We’re delighted that the law has finally been amended allowing us to extend our offering to couples.
‘We’ve got a fabulous venue in the heart of the Jersey countryside and have several different outdoor areas where couples can now choose to hold their ceremony.’
