School building project begins as land ownership battle continues

Following the completion of ecological works, contractors have now moved onto the site to prepare the area, including building a car park, vehicle entrances and creating a staff welfare facility.

Three fields on Rue Carrée which have been earmarked for the project are still in private ownership after the landowner raised the sale price of the land from £194,000 to £3.8 million.

The government refused to pay the proposed price and are instead seeking to acquire the plot using powers of compulsory purchase.

However, approval needs to be sought from States Members before any order can be passed and the matter is not due to be debated until 26 June.

Richard Cheal, head of capital projects for Jersey Property Holdings, which is developing the site on behalf of the States, said that not yet owning the three remaining fields was not a major stumbling
block.

‘All it means is that we cannot yet build the detached sports hall, but I am not that concerned about it because that
will be dealt with by the compulsory purchase.

‘We will have a conclusion,’ he said.
