Christopher Henry Hall (44), of no fixed address, admitted a charge of being drunk and disorderly by shouting and swearing and using racist language.
Centenier Philip Coffey said that just before 8 pm a member of the public witnessed Hall going up to various people and being racially abusive.
The Magistrate’s Court heard that a witness reported that Hall made racist remarks ‘of a specific nature’ outside Marks & Spencer.
The comments were made within earshot of people sitting outside the Blue Note Bar and could also be heard by other passers-by.
The police arrived and Hall continued to swear despite being warned about his language. The Centenier said that it was the opinion of the police that he was drunk and he was consequently arrested for being drunk and disorderly.
Advocate Jane Grace, defending, said that her client co-operated with the police when he was arrested.
The court was told that Hall had been banned from the Shelter Trust’s property at Aztec House for 28 days until 7 June because he went drinking that day. Advocate Grace said that he had been trying hard not to drink before that day.
Hall said: ‘I was getting bored sitting in there every day and so I went and had a drink.’
The defendant apologised for using racist language and said that he was not a racist and had only spoken that way because he was drunk.
The Magistrate, Bridget Shaw, said that the racist abuse was an aggravating factor in this instance.
