Man denies charge he murdered his wife

During a short hearing yesterday, Alfredo Da Costa Rebelo denied a single charge of murder. His wife, Ana Maria Pereira De Sousa Rebelo, was found dead in their St Helier home on 4 April last year. Mr Rebelo (59) was charged seven months after her death.

At yesterday’s hearing, Advocate Julian Gollop, defending, told the court that he would notify the court in due course whether his client would opt for an Assize trial – one which is heard before a jury – or an Inferior Number trial, which is heard and decided on by two Jurats.

The trial is due to start on Monday 20 August and is scheduled to last 12 days.

The Deputy Bailiff, Tim Le Cocq, presiding, told Mr Rebelo that he would be required to return to court on Wednesday 6 June for his next hearing ahead of the scheduled trial.

Jurats Charles Blampied and Robert Christensen were sitting. Mr Rebelo was remanded in custody.
