A special mechanical spade, which was brought over from the UK, is being used to transfer the 20-year-old maple and stone pine trees from one spot on the Horizon development plot to an area about 50 metres away.
The Jersey Development Company, which is behind the building scheme, enlisted Belles Fleurs Garden Consultancy and Plant Supply to help carry out the work. Nurseryman Bernard Rebours said he believed it was the first time a mechanical spade had been used in Jersey to transfer trees. Moving each tree – including its root ball – takes about an hour. Mr Rebours said that the final trees were due to be replanted on Thursday.
