March colder and wetter than normal

A total of 119.2 mm of rain fell during the month, which was higher than the 30-year average of 69.4 mm but well below the wettest March on record – when the Island was hit with 196.2 mm in 2001.

Heavy rainfall caused disruption to several local football teams, with water-logged pitches leading to around 40 postponed games in both the senior and junior leagues.

The average temperature for March was 7.5°C, which was lower than the 30-year average for the month (8.5°C). The coldest March in Jersey was in 1962, when Islanders endured an average temperature of 4.9°C – twice as cold as the warmest March on record, 11.2°C in 1957.

Total sunshine for the month was 131.5 hours, which was only slightly less than the average of 139.5 hours.

There were also reports of ‘freezing rain’ on the first day of the month, a phenomenon seen when snowflakes melt as they fall but then refreeze upon contact with a surface.
