Koh Tao murders: Prosecution seek to counter appeal

Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo were sentenced to death for the 2014 murders of Mr Miller and Miss Witheridge. They were also both convicted of raping Miss Witheridge.

The Burmese pair have lodged an appeal against their conviction and Thai prosecution lawyers have been granted a one month extension by Thailand’s Supreme Court to lodge their argument against the appeal. They are now due to submit their counter case on Tuesday 23 January.

The migrants initially confessed to the murders but later retracted their statements, claiming that they were tortured into making the admissions.

In March, Lin and Phyo lost their first appeal to the District Court and subsequently lodged a further appeal against their conviction in August with the Supreme Court.
