Owners contact police over the death of beloved dog

Following a nine-day search involving the family, their friends and dozens of other Islanders, the body of seven-year-old Polar Bear was found just metres from the coastal path at Plémont last weekend.

There were no obvious signs of the cause of death and Polar Bear was found in full view of the cliff path between Plémont and Grosnez, despite the family searching the same spot the previous day.

Owner Nigel Radcliffe believes it was impossible for the body to have gone undetected during such a long search operation, which even included the use of a drone, and believes it was dumped off the path shortly before it was found.

And he says the large dog couldn’t have been running around unseen for nine days.

Mr Radcliffe said the family’s theory has gained credence after the vet who conducted a post mortem examination said the labradoodle appeared to have eaten recently, as dog food was found in her stomach.

‘How she came to be on the cliff path we are not sure. Someone must know something about this,’ he said. ‘This is a small Island and she is a large dog, who was held against her will.

‘We think she either staggered to the spot she was found last Saturday evening, or someone put her there.

‘Polar Bear knew the area extremely well and she was so close to her mother, who returned home the day she went missing alone after a couple of hours. It is not possible that she had been running about unseen for nine days, she would have come home.’

The States police have said the case is being investigated and samples taken from Polar Bear have been sent to the UK for toxicology tests to be undertaken. The results are expected next week.

Polar Bear went missing on Thursday 23 November after escaping from a large enclosed field next to the Plémont coastal path. She had been in the field with her mother, Barlou, who returned home later the same afternoon.

When Polar Bear was found she had a wound on her chest and a laceration on her hip but Mr Radcliffe said that the vet believes that the wounds have been caused post death.

Anyone with information is asked to call Mr Radcliffe on either 481159 or 07797 739733, or call the States police on 612612.
