Final Uphoff radio bursaries to be awarded

Islanders wanting to study or embark on a career in radio or broadcast journalism are invited to apply to the John Uphoff Memorial Trust for financial help of up to £2,000.

Mr Uphoff, a BBC Jersey presenter for many years, died in August 2008 and his family, friends and colleagues set up the trust in his memory, raising thousands of pounds over the years to support Jersey students.

Applicants have to be 16 or over, have lived in Jersey for at least three years or have a significant connection to the Island, and they must have a passion for radio.

Mr Uphoff’s widow, Jan, said: ‘Nine years on, John would have been astonished at what’s been achieved in his name. Using this money to help people wanting to break into radio presentation or production is exactly what John would have wanted.

‘This final set of bursaries will be extra special as we wind down the trust but we are delighted that John’s memory will be kept alive through an award within the public-speaking section of the Jersey Eisteddfod.’

Applications close on 12 December, after which a shortlist of applicants will be invited to attend a short interview with a panel of trustees.

Applicants should send a CV and covering letter of between 500 and 1,000 words explaining why they are applying for the award and what they intend to do with it to: The John Uphoff Memorial Trust, 3 Poplar Avenue, Grande Route de St Martin, St Saviour, Jersey, JE2 7JR or email januphoff8@gmail.com.

Applicants are also encouraged to include an example of their audio work if possible, although previous experience is not necessary.
