Apprenticeship scheme launched

Twelve Islanders have signed up to the scheme launched by the Trackers programme in partnership with the Academy of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Studies at Highlands College and the Jersey Hospitality Association.

The apprenticeship was created in response to an industry report from last year which called for greater investment in the area and a commitment to raising industry standards and improving customer experience.

During the apprenticeship the students will be undertake a Level 3 City & Guilds Supervision and Leadership qualification.

Once they have completed this, the students will have the option to progress on to a higher apprenticeship, starting at Foundation Degree level.

Trackers manager Ross Edgar said: ‘An article in a national hospitality sector magazine reported this month that 18 per cent of hospitality and tourism businesses said their staff lacked the necessary skills to meet their business needs. We know that echoes similar sentiments locally, so that’s why we have created this apprenticeship.

‘The creation of the new bespoke programme also helps to promote hospitality and tourism as a viable long-term career option by providing a clear pathway for talented individuals and budding entrepreneurs.’

Apprenticeships supported by the Trackers programme include beauty therapy, bricklaying, cyber security and hairdressing.

Education Minister Rod Bryans said: ‘Hospitality is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world, with some reports forecasting that one in every ten jobs globally will be in this area by 2023. As more people travel more frequently to different countries, expectations increase in terms of service.

‘To keep up with the market Jersey needs to be ready to respond effectively to these expectations, to raise the bar professionally and to become innovative. I firmly believe that this starts with educating and developing our hospitality professionals, so I am delighted that the Trackers team continues to respond to the needs of Jersey’s businesses.’
