No funerals at Crematorium for two weeks

It will still be possible for cremations to take place at the site on Westmount Road, but funerals will have to be held elsewhere. The memorial area and gardens will be open as normal.

Work to replace the 56-year-old roof is due to begin on Monday 14 August and normal service is expected to resume on Tuesday 29 August.

Peter Dobin, Crematorium superintendent, said improvements needed to be carried out as the building was ‘showing its age’. ‘There have been repairs over the years but with loose tiles and leaks becoming more frequent, it’s reached the stage where a complete replacement is the only realistic option,’ he added.

He said that funeral directors and clergy were aware of the planned closure and so would be able to help mourners make alternative arrangements while work was carried out.

‘We would like to apologise for any inconvenience that is caused, and I sincerely hope that grieving families will understand the need for this important project to be carried out as quickly and efficiently as possible,’ Mr Dobin said.

The Health Department say August has been chosen as the least disruptive time for work to be carried out because of better weather and because it is usually one of the quieter months of the year for the Crematorium. It added that the work would be carried out by an approved contractor appointed by Jersey Property Holdings following a competitive tendering process.
