New Dolphin Watch app launched

The software, called SJ Dolphin Watch, and an accompanying website also allows Islanders to view areas where the creatures are most commonly found.

Dr Paul Chambers of the Sociètè marine biology section said that they had installed a number of ‘C-PODs’ off the east coast, which were capable of logging utterances from nearby dolphins.

He said: ‘In April, it picked up 88 separate recordings of dolphins within a month. There was another one but it snapped off its mooring and we have not been able to find it since – it would be great to get that back.

‘We eventually want to put a network of four or five around the Island so we can track their movements but they are very expensive – about £1,500 each. They also log other data such as water temperature and tidal movements and work by listening for the click noises that the dolphins make.’
