A budget of £1,259,000 has been allocated to the External Relations Department up to the end of next year because of an expected increase in diplomatic work with the UK, EU and other ‘potential trading partners’, as Britain negotiates its departure from the union.

Meanwhile, the States Law Officers’ Department and the Chief Minister’s Department will also receive funds.

The External Relations Department has had to employ five new temporary employees while the Brexit process is ongoing.

In a ministerial decision approving the transfer of funds to his department, External Relations Minister Philip Bailhache said that it was ‘not known’ what the precise effects of Brexit would be and resources were needed to ‘enable a full range of responses’ to the opportunities which might develop.

Last month, a spokesman for his department also said that a ‘substantial amount’ of Jersey law was derived from the EU and would therefore need to be replaced post-Brexit.
