Jersey could set up own lifeboat station, says ex-crew member

Earlier this month the 25-strong volunteer crew walked out in protest over the RNLI’s dismissal of coxswain Andy Hibbs. Mr Hibbs has since lodged an appeal which the organisation is now considering.

Former crew member Paul Battrick said that he would prefer the RNLI to run operations but added only if it resolved matters quickly.

Mr Battrick, who served at the St Helier base for 14 years, added: ‘It might be the case that maybe we do need to go it alone or start working with the French. We are much closer to France than we are to the UK after all.

Mr Battrick said the crew had hoped the issue would have been resolved by today’s start of the Barclay’s Jersey Boat Show.

A peaceful protest in support of the crew has been organised to be held at the St Helier Lifeboat Station on the Albert Pier, during the final day of the boat show on Monday. The protest is due to take place at 12 pm.
