Bellozanne gym ‘will pay for itself’

Last week Nick Corbel, regional representative for Unite, accused the department of treating staff with contempt after spending tens of thousands of pounds on a gym months after making dozens of workers redundant.

However, Infrastructure Minister Eddie Noel has defended the facility, which is available to all Bellozanne workers, saying that the equipment will improve the health and well-being of staff. He added that a number of workers did not have time to access States-run gyms at Fort Regent, Springfield or Les Quennevais.

Workers who are members of the Active Card scheme can use the gym free of charge, while non-members will pay a small charge.

The Infrastructure Department has bought the equipment from the Economic Development Department for £23,750, with the agreement that it will be bought back if the Infrastructure Department opt not to continue with the plans. The gym is being run at Bellozanne on a trial basis and if successful, similar schemes could be introduced at other States buildings.
