Drug service now without a director

Mike Gafoor, who led the Alcohol and Drug Service for 16 years, left his role before Christmas. He believes that he will not be replaced on a like-for-like basis.

Mr Gafoor warned that if he is not replaced there will be a gap in providing expert advice to the States on drug strategy and policy.

He was a key figure on the Misuse of Drugs Advisory Council – a body responsible for recommending which drugs should be banned – and played a pivotal role in identifying new drug trends and offering advice to ministers on what substances to ban.
