Manuel Rodrigues da Silva was officially appointed to the role at a ceremony that was held at the Mayfair Hotel on Friday – and he will also undertake the same duties for Guernsey.

Mr da Silva, who owns Eurofoods & Wines, takes over as consul from Carlos Santos-Costa (82), who has stepped down after 19 years in the post.

Joana Gaspar, the consul general of Portugal, who flew in from London to oversee the official appointment, said Mr da Silva had excellent credentials for the role.
