1,700 sign petition to stop new teachers’ salary cuts

NUT members are calling for the States to reconsider the decision which was made in the Medium Term Financial Plan Addition debate in September.

Newly qualified teachers’ salaries could be cut by as much as £8,000 from next year.

Robert Ward, president of NUT Jersey, which is organising the petition, said union members plan to campaign and gather further signatures in the New Year, before presenting the petition to the States.

‘We can’t let it rest. On our first day of campaigning on 29 November we collected 1,000 signatures in four hours. We had a huge amount of public support. So after seven hours of being in town we have around 1,700.’
