Andrew Douglas Capriglione (36) travelled to the Island with a friend on what he initially claimed was a fishing trip.

However, after being stopped at the Harbour, Customs officers discovered almost 30 kilos worth of cannabis hidden in the fuel tank of the car.

Both Capriglione and his friend were initially charged with importing the drugs.

But the charges against the passenger were dropped after Capriglione, a father of five, pleaded guilty and admitted sole responsibility.

Crown Advocate Christopher Baglin, prosecuting, told the court that Capriglione had debts of around £40,000.

Delivering the court’s sentence, Deputy Bailiff Tim Le Cocq told Capriglione that due to the ‘substantial mitigation’ and his family circumstances, the Jurats had agreed to a lesser sentence than would usually be expected.
