Jersey Pirate Party, which describes itself as being ‘formed by the people to represent the people’, wants to bring participatory democracy – where citizens are actively involved in every political decision – to the Island.
And Phil Renouf, the party’s leader says the group intends to have at least one candidate standing in the Island’s next election in 2018. The 57-year-old from St Clement said that he formed the party, which is currently offering free membership, because he says Islanders’ are ‘detached’ from the States.
‘There are a lot of people who are dissatisfied with the work of the States at the moment,’ Mr Renouf, a father-of-three said. ‘It’s not inclusive. People feel very distant from it.’
