Detectives were led to Jersey because the body found had been wrapped in a carrier bag which had ‘Bath Street Wine Cellar, Quality Wine Merchant, Jersey CI’ printed on the side.
A coroner later found that the baby, who was just days old at the time of her death, had been strangled and a murder investigation was launched.
However, despite extensive inquiries at the time, detectives were unable to establish how the baby came to be on Weymouth beach.
One theory, which to this day remains the most prominent and likely explanation, was that the infant had been thrown from the side of a ferry and had washed up on the beach near the Weymouth Pier bandstand.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
