THE Environment Department has hit back following 'unduly alarmist' claims about the water quality in St Aubin's Bay, moving to reassure Islanders that it is safe for bathers and other beachgoers.

In a strongly worded response, the department has criticised conclusions drawn by lobbyists Save Our Shoreline Jersey, who last week renewed calls for the States to tackle the problem of sea lettuce in the bay.

The group issued a report following tests which were carried out this summer and questioned whether the States should warn bathers of the high levels of ammonia and nitrates that were present.

Now, the Environment Department have moved to reassure Islanders that the sea water in the area remains safe.
