Witnesses claim the white Honda Jazz missed the man ‘by an inch’ as it crossed the pavement, hit a metal barrier and came to a rest on the pétanque court outside the former NatWest bank.
The driver – an 81-year-old man – was treated at the scene for shock before being taken to hospital.
It is not believed that any other vehicle was involved in the accident, which happened at about 3.30 pm yesterday.
A witness, who was walking to a shop, spoke to the JEP after it happened.
