Peace of the summer is shattered as wartime bombs are detonated

Eight anti-tank shells, which all contained explosives, damaged mortar bombs and a German S-mine dating back to between 1940 and 1945 were found hidden in the sand.

Stuart Elliot, the Island’s bomb disposal officer, said that a lot of explosives, similar to those discovered earlier this week, are found in Grouville Bay because the area was used by German officers during Second World War for training exercises.

He said that although the devices had been buried for 70 years, they were still dangerous.
