Crop-destroying moth plague could be cabbage apocalypse

The diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) or cabbage moth is a familiar sight over the summer.

However, ideal breeding conditions in Eastern Europe this year have led to a population explosion which, fanned by persistent north-easterly winds over recent weeks, means ten times the usual number has headed our way.

The infestation is so high in the UK that last weekend a two-mile-wide brown cloud was spotted over Hertfordshire and unusually higher levels were recorded in Guernsey.
