Caring Cooks of Jersey, which promotes nutritious eating in the Island, has revealed major concerns about packed lunch boxes for children, and has announced a new scheme to start delivering healthy home-made lunches direct to schools.

JEP Parenting has learned that there is a growing number of children who arrive at school on empty stomachs, some without lunches and some with chocolate spread sandwiches, sugary fruit bars and processed food.

The Caring Cooks of Jersey charity carried out a recent survey and 70 per cent of parents who responded said that they found it difficult to prepare packed lunches because of a lack of time that many have to make them up and the charity said that only one in five young people in Jersey ate their full intake of five fruit and vegetables a day and that often packed lunches were largely made up of pre-packaged foods.
