States make no move to put tax on second homes

In the Supply of Housing report released last September, it was proposed that the States investigate a new empty property tax to encourage Jersey landlords to bring more homes on to the market and help to combat the Island’s housing shortage.

According to the last census in 2011, more than 3,000 homes in Jersey were vacant, while it was revealed earlier this year that there will be an anticipated shortage of 1,000 homes in the Island over the next three years.

Deputy Montfort Tadier tabled a written question in the States this week asking whether ministers had considered an empty-home tax and what implications it could have on companies which own numerous buildings, however, Treasury Minister Alan Maclean replied that such a tax had not been considered and therefore neither had the wider implications it would have.
