Cigarette packaging: Jersey could follow UK

New laws on cigarette packaging in England are due to come into force on Friday, with ten-packs banned and boxes designed to be dull and covered in health warnings.

New regulations will see packaging standardised so they all have the same colour on the outside and white on the inside, and apart from health warnings, the brand name will be the only text allowed.

Tobacco companies have one year to get rid of old stock and roll out new packs in England following a decision on 15 May last year on the EU Tobacco Products Directive, in which MPs also voted in favour of banning menthol and flavoured tobacco from 2020 and following the decision in the UK last year, Health Minister Andrew Green said he supported the idea and Jersey would have to follow England’s lead on the proposals.
