Jersey Royals off the menu as weather hits growers

Everything from Jersey Royal potatoes and salads to autumn vegetables that are currently being planted are running behind schedule, while dairy farmers say that grass is not growing quickly enough to sustain herds, which are having to be brought in at night because of the cold.

Extra layers of plastic sheeting have been added to crops to help them grow, but farmers have warned that delays now will continue to have an impact for the rest of the year.

There are fears that Jersey Royal exports particularly will be hit as diners shun barbecues and salads until the mercury begins to rise.
