The earthquake occurred at 6.30 am, measuring five on the Richter scale.
Its centre was close to La Rochelle in western France.
In a tweet on Thursday morning, Jersey Met said: ‘Initial reports by CSEM EMSC of a magnitude 5.0 earthquake close to La Rochelle picked up by local seismograms.’
