Tourist imported cannabis to clear a £3,000 debt

Kevin Robert McCormack was approached by dealers to transport the class B drug to clear a £3,000 debt after they heard he was planning to return to the Island he had ‘fallen in love with’.

The 41-year-old, who did not know how much of the drug he was smuggling nor where it had been stashed in the car he was travelling in, was found with 28.5 kg of cannabis resin at the Harbour on 11 December last year.

Yesterday, the Royal Court chose to reduce the sentence of four and a half years which had been called for by both the Crown and McCormack’s defence counsel to one of four years, describing the case as ‘sad’.

Commissioner, Sir Michael Birt said: ‘We think this is a very sad case.’
