The first outdoor Royals of the season are now being shipped to the UK and are due to be on sale in supermarkets including Waitrose, Co-op and Tesco this week, and some of this season’s potatoes will be sold to the wholesale market at £2 per pound.

But according to Will Church, director of sales and marketing at the Jersey Royal Company, the recent cooler weather and storms during the Easter bank holiday have slowed down the development of the potatoes.

Figures released by the Jersey Met Office show that last month was much wetter than average, despite the fact that there were 14 days without any rainfall being measured.
