States to take a new look at dual role of the Bailiff

The dual role of the Bailiff – as the Island’s chief judge and the President, or ‘Speaker’, of the Assembly – has come in for criticism for many years, as it means that he acts in both the law-making States and law-interpreting courts.

Critics have included St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft and Assistant Chief Minister Philip Ozouf.

The States’ Privileges and Procedures Committee have now said that they plan to consult States Members over the matter and may look at reforming the current system, depending on the outcome of discussions.
