Law draftsmen are due to start work on updating the current law to give unmarried fathers who are named on their child’s birth certificate automatic parental responsibility, meaning they can have a say on major decisions relating to issues such as medical treatments and whether their child can move from the Island.
The JEP recently highlighted the case of a 27-year-old father who took his own life when his partner took his daughters to eastern Europe and he was unable bring them back to Jersey.
His parents spoke anonymously to this newspaper calling for political and legal support to help them with their campaign to change the law.
