The fortification, which sits below the Hotel Metropole, is due to be torn down under plans to redevelop the site for social rented housing.

It served as the secure headquarters for the Channel Islands’ German commander in chief and experts have warned that its loss is ‘almost akin to tearing down Government House’.

It is now due to be demolished, as it was never given any formal protection as a site of significance.
